How Long Is a Torque Wrench Calibration Certificate Valid?

A torque wrench calibration certificate records the tool’s accuracy on the date it was calibrated. Its validity does not automatically begin from the date the customer purchases the tool.

Many companies use a 12-month recalibration interval, but this is not a universal expiry rule for every torque wrench. The appropriate interval should be determined according to:

  • frequency and intensity of use;
  • required accuracy and application risk;
  • storage and transportation conditions;
  • previous calibration results;
  • the user’s internal quality-control system;
  • customer, industry or regulatory requirements.

ISO 6789-2 specifies requirements for torque wrench calibration and the determination of measurement uncertainty. However, the actual recalibration interval remains the responsibility of the tool owner or the organization controlling the equipment.

If a certificate shows a calibration date from more than 12 months ago, the tool should not automatically be considered inaccurate. However, where the customer’s quality system requires annual calibration, the interval will normally be counted from the calibration date shown on the certificate, not restarted from the invoice or purchase date.

For torque wrenches held in storage for an extended period, it is good practice to arrange a new calibration or performance verification before delivery or first use, especially for safety-critical or traceability-controlled applications.

Greatmax can provide torque wrenches with factory calibration documentation and support customer-specific calibration, certificate and traceability requirements.
